First Line: Before the dream is gone

Before the dream is gone
my little one
please let this dawn go on
forever
stilltime in this faint light
in which you fall asleep at last
while tired and distracted I go on
tracing the uncertain alternation
between dream and waking, a fantasy
gently alighting on your little eyes,
already a nostalgic dream for me.

Before the dream is gone, my little child,
take hold of me with your tiny hand
teach me to live without regret or pain
and without fear
you, helpless and with nothing, give me strength
you force of life, you magnet of
a love that is absolute and imminent.

Before the dream is gone, my little one,
we count how many pearls
adorn this dark alcove
now reborn in scale with you. I watch
transfixed as you glance curiously
at the world encircling you. What do you see?
What holds your eye, where everything is new?
Who am I? Who are you?

Before the dream is gone
my little one, I beg you, please let this
morning go on forever
beyond the uncertain alternation
between dream and waking, a fantasy
gently alighting on your little eyes,
already a nostalgic dream for me.
