DESOLATION, by HELEN MARGUERITE PERRI First Line: Bleak, barren waste of desert land Last Line: Trod onbenumbedalone. Subject(s): Desolation; Silence; Solitude; Loneliness | ||||||||
Bleak, barren waste of desert land, Of rolling, camel-footed sand, A burning sun whose sickening yellow Gives out an amber hue all sallow. Where nothingness to warp the mind Leaves most of life long miles behind. Relentless sun, proud star, ride high, Ne'er wonder who I am nor why. To this oblivion seems no end, Unless where skies on sand descend, And I, eyes fixed where sand meets sky, Mute, helpless, pondering, "Live or die?" Soul-racked, storm-tosseddestiny unknown, Trod onbenumbedalone. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES RETRIBUTION by HELEN MARGUERITE PERRI |
