MANSFIELD, by ELLEN ELIZA HALL PHILIPS First Line: Around me rise / the 'hills' of god Last Line: Thy memory dearer than thyself shall be. Alternate Author Name(s): Moore, Ada J. Subject(s): Mount Mansfield, Vermont | ||||||||
Around me rise The "hills of God"the wooded mountain tops In silent majesty. Before me stands The peerless Mansfield, with its profile vast Uplifted to the sky. Thus might, of old, Some giant Titan look, when laid at rest On Pelion's heights in calm and conscious strength. The snows of winter, like a hoary beard, Are lingering on his massive lips and chin Despite the smiles of sweet and sunny June. Silent and awed I sit beneath the spell Of his vast presence, as a pilgrim bows Before the shrine to which his weary feet Have made their wonted pilgrimage. From thee I turn, O slumbering giant, with a calm farewell, And yet, if I may be so blest once more To sit at sunset in my peaceful home, Lulling my babe to rest, ... thine outline vast Shall rise full oft upon the amber skies In vivid imagery, and I shall seem Once more to sit upon this flowery bank And gaze upon thy grandeur. Thus, to me Thy memory dearer than thyself shall be. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE LEAVES OF THE TREE HIDE THE SUN by DAVID IGNATOW A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1) by GILBERT KEITH CHESTERTON THE OTHER WORLD by HARRIET BEECHER STOWE VACANT STALL by ELIZABETH WILCOX BEASLEY THE WINDS by SAMUEL EGERTON BRYDGES THE HOME-RETURNING by RICHARD EUGENE BURTON |
