AGAINST MY DEATH, by DOROTHY QUICK First Line: I want to build a house against my death Last Line: Without some comfort for eath's banishment. Alternate Author Name(s): Mayer, John Adams, Mrs. Subject(s): Death; Dead, The | ||||||||
I want to build a house against my death, No pyramid or Tuscan marble tomb, I have no terror of the wind's soft breath Or dread that earth will take me to her womb. But I would build a house of gentle deeds, Well chosen words to keep my memory bright, Of knowledge that I answered human needs And brought to days of dark, a little light. A house of kindness, timbered strong with faith, Enriched by hours lived nobly to the hilt, Fashioned so well that when I am a wraith I can regard with pride the house I built. For ghosts in limbo never rest content Without some comfort for eath's banishment. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY |
