We cannot die who live on in our seed, Nor need it be the product of our flesh. Just as a child survives, so may a deed Capture the soul within a vital mesh, To live forever in the minds of men. Blood of our blood, the written word may be Closer than children. Sometimes with the pen We can create a living entity. The tree we plant lives on when we are not; The house we build, the sentences we say Mark out on earth their own especial spot, A part of us, who sped them on their way. To propagate itself is each soul's need; We do not die who live on in our seed. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PRIVILEGE OF BEING by ROBERT HASS SEAWATER STIFFENS CLOTH by JANE HIRSHFIELD SAYING YES TO LIVING by DAVID IGNATOW THE WORLD IS SO DIFFICULT TO GIVE UP by DAVID IGNATOW |
