AUTUMN, by JESSE SILL First Line: In token of his bounteous grace Last Line: Youth will not come to thy beck and call. Subject(s): Autumn; Decay; Leaves; Seasons; Wind; Fall; Rot; Decadence | ||||||||
In token of His bounteous grace All nature seems to change its face. Over all the landscape far and near, The greens of nature disappear. Nature's touch with tint and hue, The gorgeous colors come to view. Each scene, in colors, plays a part, More true than man's work of art. Colors of lavender, pink and gold, Along the hillside soon unfold. Farther down, yellow, red and brown Upon all verdure has placed its crown. The chill that comes with winter's blast Made them loose their hold, they fall at last. As they flutter down they are borne away In close embrace with the wind they play. In the valley, among the trees, Is heard the rustle of falling leaves. There they lay upon the ground For many miles scattered around. Each leaf on the earth has found a place, Soon they are in winter's close embrace, Packed in snow on the ground they lay With the warmth of spring they soon decay. O man! you too are much like a tree, The autumn of your life is plain to see. Though your leaves do not wither and fall, Youth will not come to thy beck and call. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PUT BACK THE DARK by MARVIN BELL PUTREFACTION by CHARLES BUKOWSKI WHAT COULD HAPPEN by DORIANNE LAUX SURFACE AND STRUCTURE: BONAVENTURE HOTEL, LOS ANGELES by KAREN SWENSON SEVEN ODES TO SEVEN NATURAL PROCESSES: ODE TO ROT by JOHN UPDIKE |
