PRAYER OF A MOTHER-TO-BE, by

Dear God of life and every new born thing—
Thou who hast shown again, in waking Spring
Thy power to create, in brown old earth,
The Easter lilies, telling with their birth
From shriveled bulbs, neglected, grey with mold,
The mystery of new life from the old—
I pray thee, dwell in me, and with that power,
Help me create a little human flower,
So sturdy yet so pure, that if, some day,
The Christ should cross our threshold, he would say,
With one kind hand placed on that tiny head,
"Of such the Kingdom is; let us be led."
