CRATER OF THE MOON (IN IDAHO), by DONA WAYLAND First Line: Barrens of cinder crags and ragged lava Last Line: A strange land -- from yesterday's spindle! Subject(s): Idaho | ||||||||
Barrens of cinder crags and ragged lava massed along the great rift. Cones changing from brilliant red to deepening purple as evening comes, -- while the jagged peaks of the Sawtooth Range tower in the distance. Beneath the Pahoehoe's blue crust underground rivers traverse hidden channels. Cinder cones of hardened froth, spindle bombs, ribbon bombs, bread-crust bombs, Moodoo Pinnacles, the Devil's Orchard, create a weird attraction, disclosing wide internal eruptions during a past age. Great Owl Cavern, Indian Tunnel, Needles Cave, -- haunted cavern with icy breath weaving frost crystals on stalactites hanging in bizarre shapes from arched domes. And, -- wild flowers, lichen, ferns and moss! Underdrones of wind through -- moon crater. A strange land -- from yesterday's spindle! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME by CAROLYN KIZER THE IDAHO EGG WOMAN by KAREN SWENSON FAREWELL TO IDAHO by H.
