MOTHER LOVE, by LEANDER M. ZIMMERMAN First Line: I saw a mother working Last Line: Through endless, happy days! Subject(s): Caregivers; Mothers | ||||||||
I saw a mother working: She gave her home the best, And made her humble fireside A place of peace and rest. Her children round her gathered, Their arms all intertwined, With mother love she drew them Into the ways divine. I saw a mother watching: 'Twas night. Her child was ill. I passed by in the morning, And she was watching still. A sentinel on duty, She asks no praise of men, But that a life now fading May be restored again. I saw a mother weeping For one whose life had fled, Like Rachel, sorrow-stricken, Not to be comforted. Some day, when reunited, With dear ones gone before, Her heart will ask no questions, Her tears will flow no more. I saw a mother waiting For letters long delayed, No word had come to cheer her From one for whom she prayed. The sacrifices rendered, Alas, all seem to fail, But still she hopes, believing Her prayers will yet prevail. I saw a mother walking One sad and lonely day, Her child though often cautioned Had wandered from the way. Despite heartache and sorrow Her own she will befriend, While we forget and censure She loves unto the end. I saw a mother wending, With children by her side, Her way unto the temple, Where Gospel gifts abide. In songs they all united, And bowed their heads in pray'r, They felt a sacred presence And found a blessing there. I saw a mother weaving Her children's lives with love -- The pattern which she followed Was given from above; She is my angel mother She's gone but still she's here, She lives in those she cherished -- To me she's near, she's near. All hail, ye blessed mothers! Salutes to you we bring! You are God's fairest creatures, Your sweetest praise we sing. Someday in His great Homeland You will receive His praise -- Your own will rise and bless you Through endless, happy days! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MY MOTHER'S HANDS by ANDREW HUDGINS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS IN THE 25TH YEAR OF MY MOTHER'S DEATH by JUDY JORDAN THE PAIDLIN' WEAN by ALEXANDER ANDERSON BLASTING FROM HEAVEN by PHILIP LEVINE GETHSEMANE by LEANDER M.
