THE WHIPPOORWILL'S SONG, by
First Line: Often at dusk, before twilight
Last Line: Every burden I had.
Subject(s): Birds; Whipporwills

Often at dusk, before twilight,
When I hear the whippoorwill's song,
Filling the hillside and hollow,
Echoing far out and long,
I feel that the bird is pouring
Out of the heart of me,
All I have known of sorrow
With swift intensity,
Hurling it into the shadows
Leaving me speechless but glad
That I can fling from my shoulders
Every burden I had.
